Mary Joan Waid
Born in Emporia, Kansas, Mary Joan Waid moved to New York City after she graduated from Wichita State University with a degree in fine arts. She has paintings in the collections of the Indianapolis Museum of Art, the Minneapolis Museum of Art, Wichita Art Museum and the National Academy of Design in New York City.
Waid, known for her highly personal still lifes and self-portraits, always works from life. She says, The photograph stops everything. When you work from life, everything keeps changing. That's one of the things I love about the process. It's a process of discovery.
