Ralph Goings
Born in Corning, California in 1928, Goings is recognized as one of the original members of the Hyperrealist or Photo-Realist group of the late 1960's. For Goings, the camera and photorealism are merely means to immobilize light and crystallize moments of reality. He has produced a remarkable series of extremely bold watercolor still lifes featuring a familiar arsenal of diner paraphernalia: cream jugs, napkin dispensers, saltshakers, ketchup bottles, and ashtrays. Close up vantage points give the subject matter a monumental quality. He has drawn our attention to the ordinary everyday experience of American life, showing that there is beauty in the mundane.
