It is from an edition of fifty, and it is truly one of my favorites. It is obviously a Mecklenburg County themed image. These images are reminiscences and memories of his childhood. Bearden and I spoke personally about this work and how he came to give it this title. At that time it would have been the mid 1920’s-1930’s and many people worked in the local textile mills and also lived in mill housing. It is a poignant scene of a husband and wife readying themselves for the day. Shifts at the mill were regulated by the, “report to work whistles.” The second whistle was to be at your station and the first was a five minute warning.
