Donald Sultan American, b. 1951

Overview

Donald Sultan has been a titan of modern art since he stepped onto the scene in the 1970s. He works in aabstract style, often on a monumental scale, to create semi-representational images of our perceived world. His subject matter ranges from stylized still life to industrial disaster, and he is known to use materials as unconventional as tar and common house paint. Sultan holds an BFA from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and an MFA from the School of the Art Institute in Chicago. He now lives and works in New York City.
