Jerald Melberg Gallery is pleased to present an invitational group exhibition featuring artists with southern connection. The exhibition features paintings, sculpture and works on paper of varied context and imagery including both realism and abstraction. In addition to artists actively represented by Jerald Melberg Gallery, the exhibition includes works of art from other galleries in our region. We thank our colleagues from Elder Gallery of Contemporary Art, Hampton III Gallery and Hodges Taylor Gallery for their willingness to loan works of art for this exhibition.

Gee's Bend
Mary Lee & Louisiana BendolphThe women of Gee’s Bend, a small rural community in southwest Alabama, are celebrated for making exquisite abstract quilts. Based on skills and an aesthetic passed down through several generations, the quilts have been highly praised for their raw beauty, bold geometry and sophisticated color sense. The New York Times called the quilts some of the most miraculous works of modern art America has produced.
Mary Lee Bendolph and her daughter-in-law Louisiana, both native Gee’s Bend quilters, have created colorful etchings that reflect the same great quilting tradition. Each of the prints is the translation of an actual quilt sewn by one of the Bendolph women. Working collaboratively with master printers, Mary Lee and Louisiana were able to capture in amazing detail the stitching and textures of the used and worn fabrics in the original quilts. -

Courtesy of Hodges TaylorThe smaller piece with bridge like structure depicts the foot of my grandfather's hand plane (at the bottom) which I did have along with his work box and one of his paint brushes. Just no picture of him. He drowned in the Mississippi in 1920 I do believe - sometime after he and his friend Conrad told the folks at the saloon they were going "across the River." - Tom Stanley
